World Series of Poker Videos:
1989 World Series of Poker

This section is dedicated to the world series of poker videos and the world series of poker past winners.

In 1989, Phil Hellmuth Jr. emerged at World Series of Poker. Many people expected the legendary Johnny Chan would do in 1989 what no other player had been able to do in the history of the WSOP: i.e., win three successive titles.

Doyle Brunson tried and was unsuccessful and so did Stu Ungar. Nevertheless, it seemed like history was within Johnny Chan's grasp in 89. He would come into the tournament confident, even perhaps a bit brash. He was the man to beat and it seemed out of the question to believe that the "poker brat" Phil Hellmuth Jr. would get in the way of Chan's goal.

Yet, that is exactly what took place. Hellmuth went home with a WSOP bracelet and a mammoth $755,000 in prize money.

On an unhappier note, the WSOP's creator Benny Binion would not live to see the end of 1989, nevertheless the tournament would continue for many years in the daring tradition with which its distinguished founder started it.

Sit back and enjoy one of the truly great moments in World Series of Poker history.
